Make your own beats

Starting out to make your own beats can be fun and also the biggest headache you ever gave yourself. With the right tools, you can be making any style of beat in no time flat. It is much easier then you think. Now let's get started with some ways to make your own beats. Here's 10 ways to start.

A. Style - You need to know exactly what style you are trying to make a beat for. Start with a beat style you're comfortable with like POP, RAP,R&B, TECHNO and more. You may create a beat that you don't know what style it is. But if it sounds good, keep doing it, you may even sell it to a producer or DJ.

B. Pick An Artist - Pretend you're working for a famous Artist and they've hired you to make a beat for them. Make sure you picture in your mind and hear in your ears, what that artist would want the beat to sound like. Hear your artist on your new beat. This tactic should help you make your own beats easier and faster.

C. Listen To Songs - Listen to the artist you are making the beat for. Hear the style. Feel the kind of beats the artist is rapping over and try to make a beat similar to it.

D. Building The Song -This step is crucial if you want to be taken seriously. Formatting of a song is the intro, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, etc. You can change some of the order around to personalize it to your own beat style. Listen to your artist's songs again and write down the order they format their song or songs. Take note when an instrument comes in and fades out. The most basic form to start with is, 2 or 4 bar intro, 16 bar verse, 8 bar chorus, 16 bar verse, 8bar chorus, 16 bar verse, 8 bars chorus. This is a very common format in a rap song.You can create an 8 bar loop to keep it the same throughout the whole song, but it's not as creative or interesting when you start to make your own beats.

E. Lay down the beat - Start with drums, start with drums start with drums! Weather it be a hi hat, a kick or a snare, it's always a good place to start. Save a pattern for four bars with the drums first. You can then start to add some symbols, toms, cow bells or whatever. Remember, drums are the most important thing when making your hip hop beats. Make your drums strong and hard hitting. The best way to do this is NOT using online beat makers, and not using cheap tappy tap software kits that you download from the internet for free. If your drums are weak, then your beat is going to be weak. Spend a little cash on a bad ass beat maker and you'll save yourself a ton of headaches. F. Making a Melody - Most beat makers have trouble in this area because most beat makers can't play keyboards or any other instrument for that matter. You may want to learn some keyboard or buy one of the new keyboards that light up the keys for lessons. Learn your scales major and minor. Try different combos and patterns until you make something you like. Always try to use an instrument that stands out to put your melody in the foreground. You could do a 4 bar melody, or an 8 bar melody. Try it both ways and listen to your beat until you like it.

G. Adding layers to your beat - Layering a beat or song is what's done to make it sound more full or phat. After you think your beat is done, you may find a couple of places that could use a little fill. You can go and make it sound bigger by filling gaps with layers. You can do this by making the same melody pattern with another instrument. Add instruments through your whole beat until it sounds super fat!

H. Stereo Panning- This is the location of the instrument in the right, left or middle of the stereo field. Remember how you notice this when listening to your favorite song whil you're driving? Because the left and right speakers are separated more inside your ride. You can use panning for any and all reasons. The main reason is to keep the song or beat large and in charge. It makes the song wider when one instrument is more right, and another may be left. Try to keep your main melody instrument toward or right on center.

I. Mixing - LISTEN, THIS IS IMPORTANT! If you have a poor mix on your beat, then it's game over and you wasted all that time. Start with each track individually and get it right the first time. Check each track by itself and make sure it sounds right alone. If each track sounds good alone, the whole beat will sound that much better when it's done. Don't push your levels into the RED or you'll be distorting the sound. Some people think that pushing the levels into the red makes it louder and better, not true. You want a clean recording and beat, you use the power of the playback system for loudness and bass. If you are distorting, check all instruments with a lot of low end like kick, bass, sub. This low end of the sound spectrum tend to distort more often.

J. The Bounce - When you make your own beats, you'll want to share or sell your successes. You need to transport it, play it from a CD or upload it to the internet. When you're exporting a beat for cd, always us .wav file format at 44.1 16bit. When uploading to the internet use 320kbps or 128kbps 320 being the highest MP3 quality. A lot of websites will not accept 320kbps because the file size ends up too big. 128kbps is your best all around for the internet, sounds pretty good too. Again, it's all in your software. Make the best beats you can with the right software, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I'll show you the best system around right now.
